Recently the SA Premier and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Steven Marshall released the final report of the South Australian Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme in state parliament. The scheme was designed “to compensate South Australian members of the Stolen Generations without the need for litigation” The scheme was overseen by an independent assessor, John Hill. Mr Hill heard the stories of many stolen generations survivors and said, among other things in the report that “the majority had horrible, even barbaric experiences”
Lucy Kingston spoke to Arrente woman, Stolen Generations survivor and academic at the University of Adelaide Dr Jenni Caruso to find out her thoughts on the scheme and the report. Dr Caruso joined other community members in providing advice to John Hill throughout the scheme and she also interviewed him on the scheme at the recent Reconciliation SA Apology Breakfast.
