NOTICE OF AUTHORISATION MEETINGS 

KAURNA – NATIVE TITLE CLAIM(S)

10.30 am meetings start

Members of the existing KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP (defined below) and the PROPOSED KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP (defined below) are invited and encouraged to attend. Carers are welcome.

Regardless of whether you identify as a Kaurna person, if you think you are or might be 

a Kaurna person, or

descended (including by adoption) from any of the existing or proposed Apical Ancestors (see below),

or descended (including by adoption) from Kaurna persons or members of ‘the Adelaide Tribe’,

please attend the meetings or contact Campbell Law on (08) 8227 1223 prior to 25 November 2017 to find out whether you may be eligible to vote at the meetings.

GROUP MEMBERSHIP

You are a member of the KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP if you are a descendant* of any one or more of the following existing Apical Ancestors:

You are a member of the PROPOSED KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP if (a) you are a member of the KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP, OR (b) you are a descendant* of any one or more of the following proposed Apical Ancestors:

11.James Goldsmith12.the brothers Eli (also known as Willie) and David Bews or Bewes

* “descendant” means biological descendants and Aboriginal people raised as children and as part of the family of the biological descendants and their descendants.

DECISION-MAKING

Those who attend the meetings and who are eligible to vote will determine how decisions will be made.

IF YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN MAKING THE DECISIONS BELOW, YOU MUST ATTEND.IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND, DECISIONS BINDING YOU MAY BE MADE IN YOUR ABSENCE.

DECISIONS TO BE MADE AT THE MEETINGS

Prior to the meetings, an update in relation to the Kaurna Native Title Claim (Federal Court Action SAD6001/2000) will be given.

At the first authorisation meeting, the KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP will be asked to decide whether to authorise an amendment to the existing claim (SAD6001/2000) to:

  • Describe the apical ancestor Nellie Raminyemmermin as Mary Monarto (also known as Nellie Raminyemmermin); and
  • add the proposed Apical Ancestors (see above) as apical ancestors of the claim group.

If the KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP so decides, at the second authorisation meeting the PROPOSED KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP (as identified by the first meeting) will be asked to decide whether to:

  • authorise a native title determination application in the terms of the existing claim as proposed to be amended; and
  • authorise the present applicant or some other applicant to amend and then continue the existing claim (SAD6001/2000), including any ancillary steps.

At the third authorisation meeting, the RELEVANT KAURNA GROUP** will be asked to decide:

  • whether to authorise the making of a new native title determination application for and on behalf the RELEVANT KAURNA GROUP in respect of an area of land and waters which overlaps the Ngadjuri Nation #2 native title claim SC2011/002, possibly in and around the Clare Valley (see Map 1); or
  • whether to authorise the making of a new native title determination application for and on behalf the RELEVANT KAURNA GROUP in respect of an area of land and waters which overlaps the Narungga Nation native title claim SC2013/002, possibly in and around The Hummocks (see Map 2); or
  • whether to authorise the making of any other new native title determination application for and on behalf the RELEVANT KAURNA GROUP in respect of an area of land and waters; or
  • in each case, if a decision to authorise a new application is made:
  • what area of land and waters is to be the subject of the application; and
  • what native title rights and interests are to be claimed; and
  • who is to be authorised as the applicant to make that application.

** the RELEVANT KAURNA GROUP is either the KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP or the PROPOSED KAURNA NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP (as identified by the first meeting) depending upon the outcome of the first and second meetings.

TRANSPORT

Two or more buses will be chartered to provide free transport to and from Tandanya.At least one bus will serve the north of the Adelaide metropolitan region, and at least one bus will serve the south.If you wish to use the bus service, please contact Campbell Law on (08) 8227 1223 prior to 25 November 2017 to register your interest and for more information.

If you cannot reasonably catch the bus service provided, your reasonable travel expenses or some portion thereof may be met.Please check with Campbell Law in advance of the meetings.
