Claims in SA
Since the passing of the Native Title Act, over 40 Native Title claimant applications have been filed with the Federal Court over South Australia's lands and waters.
With the withdrawal or combination of claims or claims being struck out through native title and Federal Court proceedings, the number of active claims has been reduced over recent years. For example, in mid 2002 there remained 31 active native title claims; in late 2005 there were 26 active claims; and in late 2007 there were 22 active claims.
On the 30th September 2008, there was 23 active or determined Native Title applications in South Australia. A State map of these applications is available from the National Native Title Tribunal (see www.nntt.gov.au/Publications-And-Research/Maps-and-Spatial-Reports/Pages/State-Maps.aspx).
In addition to those groups that have lodged Native Title applications, there are other groups that have no application under the Native Title Act but actively assert, and have negotiated agreements with respect to, their native title rights across traditional lands. Those groups include the Narungga and Ngadjuri ‘claim’ groups.
